Why So Many Men Feel Lost Right Now
What lies underneath Louis Theroux' manosphere doc. Also: The Oscars and the rise of social media critivists (i.e. critic/activists).
The manosphere doc was good, but I kept thinking there’s a larger story underneath it about technology, gender, and masculinity.
Men used to do hard things on the regular. We’d take risks, endure discomfort, and make visible sacrifices. We dug ditches, mined coal, fought wars, built bridges, farmed land, etc.
Now, life has largely moved behind screens.
Instead of doing tough stuff, we play video games, livestream, doomscroll, and spreadsheet. Even when we do engage in combat, it’s via drone.
Everything’s been digitized. And as friction has disappeared, so have many of the traditional ways of proving manhood.
